Tamika L. Carey is an Associate Professor of English and NEH Daniels Family Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Virginia.
She is an interdisciplinary scholar trained in Rhetoric and Composition Studies and specializing in Cultural Rhetorics, African American and Feminist rhetorics, Black women’s intellectual histories and writing traditions, and the memoir. Her first scholarly book, Rhetorical Healing: The Reeducation of Contemporary Black Womanhood (SUNY 2016), is a feminist critique of the discourses and strategies within Black women’s wellness culture throughout the last thirty years. Her other published work appears in such venues as Rhetoric Review, Enculturation: A Journal of Rhetoric, Writing, and Culture, Signs: Journal of Women in Culture, Present Tense: A Journal of Rhetoric in Society, Peitho, JHR, and Rhetoric Society Quarterly.
Beyond this research and teaching, she is also an inspirational writer. She is the author of Getting to Know Him: Observations and Experiences From My Walk of Faith (PublishAmerica 2004). For a short time, she wrote a monthly column and several feature stories for AverageGirl Magazine.
She is a dedicated and award-winning teacher. She was recognized with a Graduate Teaching Award from Syracuse University, and she has held the University of Virginia's Institute for Practical Ethics in Public Life Donchian-Casteen Fellowship.
Dr. Carey is committed to improving her community. To date, she has served elected terms on the Conference on College Composition and Communication's Executive Board and other organizations. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Rhetoric Society of America, the Advisory Board of the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition, and the Advisory Council of the United Way of Greater Charlottesville.
She proudly hails from Orange County, Virginia. She is an aspiring pianist, travel lover, and a long-suffering New York Knicks fan.
